Rotary in India

Rotary in India has a long and rich history. The first Rotary club in India was established in Calcutta (now Kolkata) in 1920, and since then, Rotary has played a critical role in the country's social and economic development. Rotary clubs in India are involved in a wide range of activities, from providing clean drinking water and sanitation to promoting education, healthcare, and social welfare.

One of the most significant contributions of Rotary in India is its efforts to eradicate polio. In 1985, Rotary International launched its PolioPlus program, which aimed to eradicate polio worldwide. Rotary in India played a crucial role in this effort, partnering with the Indian government to immunize millions of children against polio. Through its tireless efforts, Rotary in India helped to reduce the number of polio cases in the country from tens of thousands in the 1980s to zero by 2011. This achievement is considered one of the most significant public health victories in history.

Rotary in India is also involved in promoting education, particularly for underprivileged children. Rotary clubs across the country support initiatives such as providing scholarships, building schools, and promoting literacy. For example, the Rotary Literacy Mission is a flagship program that aims to eradicate illiteracy in India by providing basic literacy and numeracy skills to adults and children.

Another significant area of focus for Rotary in India is healthcare. Rotary clubs in India are involved in a wide range of health initiatives, from providing basic healthcare services to promoting awareness about diseases such as cancer and HIV/AIDS.
